We climbed 2,000\u00a0feet\u00a0up\u00a0to Jack’s Peak and Burro Mountain today.\u00a0 I found a dead horny toad on the road – poor fella. I’ve always liked these creatures, and I’m looking forward to seeing some live ones in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Pat at the top of Jacks Peak.\u00a0 The Lodgepole pines were a welcome change and the wind blowing through them reminded me of Lake Arrowhead as a kid.

Mud Spring<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

We hiked past Mud Spring.\u00a0 This was on the side of a hill in the middle of the trail. Kind of an odd spot to find a spring.

We took a 1.5\u00a0mile side trail to Burro Mountain Homestead where we are spending the night in the Teddy Roosevelt room (where he once stayed).\u00a0 This place is an odd combination of historical site and trailer park\/ campground.\u00a0 We bought some ice cream sticks, personal pizzas, and Schwann frozen hamburgers, fixed them up in the kitchen and they were delicious.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone here waves and smiles and talks with us.  They trust us to use the kitchen as we wish, which makes me want to be sure to leave everything in pristine condition. I met Jane in the laundry and she showed me how to use the washing machine and clean the lint traps.  Good tips.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are no other hikers here.\u00a0 In fact, the last hiker we saw was Heather back in Lordsburg.\u00a0 Pretty empty country but I like it like that.\u00a0 I suspect we will see lots of hikers in Silver City because we are going to be there for the start of Trail Days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

My ankle is still a little sore after rolling it yesterday, but I think it is going to be ok.  Pat is snoring away in our shared room, so I think I will watch some YouTube for a bit. Night.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
